At a glance: Alkemie Jewelry has something for everyone, from rock ‘n roll tough to dainty and elegant, and it’s all made from reclaimed materials (though you wouldn’t know it to look at it - and we mean that in a good way).
Who’s behind the brand? Husband and wife jewelry designing duo Ashley Lowengrub & Dara Gerson
What do they do? Alkemie jewelry is a little bit tough and edgy, a little bit rock ‘n roll, but softened by its roots in nature and organic objects. Ashley and Dara often start the design process with inspiration from found objects (lavender flowers, snake vertebrae, a feather, the skin of a stingray) which they cast through a lost wax process and then transform into wearable art. They have a pretty huge inventory including jewelry and belts for both men and women, covering a fairly wide range of aesthetics and taste, but to our mind, where they excel lies in the pieces with that extra bit of edge to them. Being a socially and environmentally responsible business is at the top of their priorities, but it's at no sacrifice of quality or design, and for that, we love them.
Where are they based? Topanga Canyon, Los Angeles. All of their pieces are handmade in L.A.
Bonus Feel-Good aspect? Aside from the fact that their jewelry is made from 100% reclaimed materials which is great from a sustainability point of view, each month Alkemie donates a portion of their online sales to a new charity (check their website to see which one is featured this month).
Editors’ favorites from the line? We gravitate towards the pieces that are a little bit edgier like the huge stingray cuff, but some of the more delicate bangles are also calling out to us, like the sweet lavender bangles.
What materials do they use? All of their goods are made from 100% reclaimed metal and leather.
Where can I get the goods? The best place is straight from their website.
