At a glance: Greenwich Vintage Co. specializes in breathing new life into vintage shoes by re-soling them with an unexpected pop of color.
Who’s behind the brand? Master cobbler Tamas “Zen” Pomazi teamed up with Max Miller in 2011 and between the two of them they split the crafting and the more business-y side, each man bringing what he does best to the table.
What do they do? “Zen” takes an old pair of shoes and makes them new again, maintaining the original last and upper, and resoling them with outlandish rubber soles. They have their own stock of vintage shoes they use to produce their ready-to-wear line, but the other option is for you to send in your own shoes (or your grandfather’s…) and have them resoled. Amazing what a colorful sole and a pair of new colorful laces will do for an old pair of wingtips! The concept is simple, but we think it’s sheer genius. Their ready-to-wear line is pretty stunning too, combining crazy textiles like camouflage or delicate floral prints with traditional wing tips and wacky soles.
What materials do they use? They use high quality vintage leather shoes ands pair them with long-lasting tough colorful rubber soles.
Where are they based? All their shoes are hand-cobbled in Waconia, Minnesota.
Editors’ favorites from the line? Honestly, we are drooling over pretty much every item on their site, there’s something about the vintage traditional beautifully aged shoe combined with the fun modern soles that totally gets us. We love the simplicity of a simple cognac wing-tip with the white midsoles and the blue soles, and those crazy florals are amazing too if you’re looking for something extra outside-of-the-box, but our absolute favorite has to be simply the idea of sending in our own well-loved well-worn shoes and having a pop of color and support added.
Any special collaborations? They done a tie and bow tie with General Knot & Co, a New England-based company that specializes in ties and other small accessories. They also currently have a limited edition special collaboration with the folks at American shoe brand Well Bred that’s pretty amazing - graphic black and white print on a red sole. Every pair of shoes also comes with a pair of colored Benjo’s laces, which is a nice little bonus.
Where can I get the goods? Through their website http://greenwichvintage.us/shop/ . They also often participate with pop-up stores at events like NorthernGRADE, American Field, and Confirmed Stock, where you could find some of their ready-to-wear shoes. But honestly, we think the coolest thing is sending in your own shoes or boots and having them breathe new life into them.
